1. HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH A SUNBEAM

Early one morning Redback the mouse squeezed out of the burrow beneath the old pine tree and scrambled up the rough trunk. He found himself a comfortable spot on a wide, stout branch, and settled down to wait for the sun to show itself over the edge of the mountains.

"If you sit quiet as can be," Redback thought to himself, "you'll be able to catch the very first sunbeam - and you can learn about the Most Important Thing. Sunbeams live high up in the sky, and from there they can see everything, and they know everything."

Redback wanted very much to understand the Most Important Thing: where did the forest come from, and the sun, and the stars - and the whole wide wonderful world? But nobody else cared - not the big creatures, and not the little ones either.

"What a silly question!" snorted the hare, when the little...

2. HOW CAN YOU BREAK SUNLIGHT INTO PIECES?

The next morning Redback Mouse came dashing out of the burrow only to see that the sky was covered with dark clouds, and a light drizzling rain was pattering all about. Swiftpaw, who was curious to see his brother talk with a sunbeam, poked out his nose hard on his brother's tail - and then pulled it right back inside.

"Hey, Redback, get back in here, can't you see it's raining? You're magic sunbeam isn't going to come today."

"No, thanks, I'm going to wait for him anyway," Redback answered. "There might be a little hole up in the clouds somewhere, and he'll get through."

"You don't know a thing about the weather," Swiftpaw called out, and then, seeing his brother turn away, added encouragingly, "Come on now, Red, rain like this isn't going to stop any time soon. Let's go back to bed, OK?"

But Redback had no intention of going...

3. WHY THE RAINDROPS FLEW AWAY

Redback dreamt that he himself turned into a little cloud full of tiny raindrops, and he soared high into the sky.

Other clouds were also floating lightly in the cool air, and they all called out a friendly greeting to the little mouse, and said how surprised they were that he wasn't afraid to fly so very, very high above the treetops. In fact Redback wasn't the least bit scared. Diving and swimming about in the great blue sky wasn't hard at all, and it sure was fun!

He wanted to play tag with another little cloud he had just spotted hiding behind its big fluffy neighbour, but the raindrops inside called out to him, "Redback, don't forget, we've got work to do! We have to go and give somebody water to drink. Let's go down a little closer to the ground."

Redback wanted very much to tell them that he wasn’t finished with flying around, but he suddenly had a funny feeling that he shouldn’t argue with the raindrops, and so he swooped down towards the forest.

On the edge of a clearing a mother wolf was lying in the brush. The sun was baking hot, and the wolf was terribly thirsty and breathing hard, and her red tongue hung out of her mouth, panting. The night before she’d got herself caught in a trap. After a long, hard struggle she’d worked herself free, but her hind paw was broken and bleeding and she could run no farther. As she licked her wound she fretted about her cubs, who were all alone in the den. The wolf gazed longingly at the sky. If only it would rain! Then she could quench her thirst and make her way back home. And the rain would also wash away the traces of ...

WHAT THE TREES WHISPERED

The branch where Redback was lying had been well warmed by the sun, and felt good on his belly and paws. High above, at the top of the tall pine tree, the wind rustled the branches, and it seemed to Redback that the tree was trying to comfort him with its gentle sounds. He snuggled closer to the warm branch, closed his eyes, and started thinking.

"What did I do wrong? I thought I did everything just like Sunbeam said, but it came out all backwards. Now my brothers are mad at me, and the other creatures think I'm stupid or crazy. Why? Why?"

The pine tree began softly to sing a lullaby, and soon Redback was dozing. In his sleep, the pine tree spoke to him.

"Don't worry, little mouse, everything will be all right."

"Eh? Who are you talking to there, neighbor?" asked an old fir tree that stood not very far away. She was the mother of the little trees that grew on the edge of the hollow.

"A mouse. He's lying on my lowest branch, the big thick one," the pine answered.

"Oh, indeed? And whatever has got you ....

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD

Redback climbed down to the burrow, but as soon as he had passed through the door he stopped short in amazement. The table was covered with all sorts of delicious-looking dishes: fresh sweet carrot, dried strawberries, cedar nuts, and more. In the middle stood a candle, which the mice only ever lit on the very biggest holidays.

"Wh.. wh.. what's this?" Redback stammered, feeling a knot in his stomach. What were his brothers up to, anyway?

"Feast for a king, what do you think?" Homey answered grumpily. "Go on, then, sit in the place of honor."

"What for?" Redback asked, even more worried than before.

Swiftpaw gave him a friendly pat on the back.

"Never mind, brother. Like it or not, you're a hero. The whole forest is talking about you today. Found the root of life, of all things! So we decided to celebrate," he explained, then added, "They'll be telling this story to our kids and grandkids."

"But it wasn't me. I didn't do anything," Redback protested. "It was Sunbeam…" - but his brothers plopped him firmly in the place of honor and tucked into their food without giving him a chance to finish.

When they had all eaten their fill, the brothers asked Redback to tell them what the root ...

WHERE THE STARS LIVE

Redback Mouse woke up so early the next morning, that when he crawled out of the burrow he could still see the stars in the sky, and the sky about the mountain had just barely begun to get light. He climbed up to his usual spot, lay down and gazed at the stars.

"I wonder if stars can talk?" he thought. "And where they live: in the sky, or maybe they're higher than the sky? If only a star would fall into the forest, even a little one, I'd find it and ask it about everything."

Through the branches of the tree Redback caught a glimpse of three stars shining so brightly it was if they had settled down amidst the twigs, like brilliant pine cones. For a moment he almost felt like climbing out onto the smaller branches to see if there really were stars perched there.

Suddenly one of the stars twinkled, and he heard ...

WHAT IS THE HAPPINESS

Redback woke up when he felt something tickling him.

The forest was ringing and singing in a thousand different harmonies, and the sun was already halfway over the mountain.

«Uh-oh, I must have I overslept,» he thought with a start, and then he heard a friendly voice:
«I’ve been tickling and tickling and you just keep dozing away! My dear little sleepyhead!»

Redback blinked several times to get the sleep out of his eyes.

«Sunbeam! I’m sorry, I’m so happy… so happy…»

And indeed he was so happy he could hardly say anything. His little body was flooded with the joy of seeing his friend again, to the tip of every last fur and whisker. Then he remembered that the sunbeam never stayed long - for sunbeams have many things to do - and so he decided to get out all his questions at once.

«Sunbeam, please tell me, I just have to know:
What’s the Most Important Thing in the world? And what is happiness? And why don’t my brothers believe me

«Hold on there a minute!» the sunbeam laughed. «There’s no rush, little mouse. You’ve got your whole life ahead of you to understand those things! But just the same, remember well what I tell you now.

The Most Important Thing is to shine on others.

Happiness is when you know where to find ...

THE FOREST COUNCIL

The mice froze. After a moment they heard a sharp rap.
«Well, there you are,» muttered Homey. «It was bound to happen.

Well, Redback, you made the bed, you go lie in it. Go on, see who’s poking around out there.»

«Hey!» the voice outside called again. «Come out before I dug up this burrow of yours!»

Redback was quaking with fear as he got up from the table.

«Sunbeam! Raindrop! Please help me,» he whispered.
He poked the tip of his nose out of the burrow and saw a badger, who gave him a fierce look.

«Do you always keep people waiting so long around here?» the badger asked angrily. «I want to see that mouse who found the root of life.»

«Here, er, I.. I mean, it’s me,» Redback stammered.

The badger’s face became terribly serious, and he gave Redback a low bow and twitched his tail.

«What’re you… what’s that for?» the puzzled little mouse asked.

«You have been summoned to the forest council, and I am its messenger,» the badger announced. «I am only doing as I must, by the rules of the council - rules that are as old as the forest itself.»

«I don’t care,» Redback answered. «I’m still not going. I’m scared of the big animals, and I’m so small…»

The little mouse’s voice was even smaller than he was.

«Do you have any idea what you’re saying?» the badger asked in astonishment as his eyebrows raised to the sky. «Never before has a lowly little mouse been invited the forest council. You are making history!»

«I don’t care about any old history,» Redback said stubbornly. «And anyway your council isn’t a real council at all.»

«Enough nonsense!» the badger shouted angrily, and stamped his foot.

«Will you come to the council on your own, or must I drag you there?»

Redback had no choice. He went with the badger.

The council was meeting in ...

CAN YOU LEAVE A SUNBEAM BEHIND?

Everything was going just fine until one day at breakfast
Swiftpaw said, «Redback, did you know that all the wood mice are mad at you?»

«How come?’ Redback asked in surprise. «What did I do to them?»

«They used to live a simple life, but now, whenever some fox or bobcat catches them he always teases them: “Bring me a root of life, mouse, and I”ll let you go.’

So of course they make all kinds of silly promises, anything to get away, even though they don’t have a clue what the root of life looks like or where they might find it. And now the hunters are all mad because the mice are tricking them, and they take their revenge by wrecking burrows or hiding in ambush beside the paths.

All the mice are saying, “Redback can either teach us how to find this root of life, or get out of the forest.” They want everything to be just like it was before.»

«What do you mean?» Redback asked unhappily. «I don’t know where to look for the root of life, you know that. And besides, was it really better before? Foxes and all the others have always hunted mice.»

«They say so: if a hunter caught you, it was curtains, and that was that.

Now there’s the smallest chance that you can ...

MIRACLES LIVE EVERYWHERE

When Redback and Swiftpaw got to the lake, the sun was already past noon, and the water in the lake was so full of brilliant sparkles that they half-closed their eyes when it first came into view.

«Look at the lake, Redback. Full of light, just the way you like it, I bet,» Swiftpaw said encouragingly.

«It sure is beautiful here,» Redback nodded. «The great wide blue sky above, and below all these bright colors skipping across the water below like an ocean of sunlight. There are so many sunbeams here that I’ll never be able to hear them all. I can only talk to one sunbeam at a time, you know.»

«Never mind, you’ll learn,» his brother reassured him, with a friendly nudge. «You can talk to practically anyone, even the rocks if you want to.

And look at how many of them there are here!»

Redback looked around him and saw that the whole lakeshore was covered with rocks, great boulders and tiny pebbles alike.

«Hey, brother, over here!» he heard Swiftpaw call. «Under the boulders here, there’s a tiny cave you can sleep in, and the ground is soft. Perfect for a burrow. Just look at it! No way any ....
